Today's Beautiful Gem: `Silence' by Amrita Pritam,
translated from Panjabi by Balwant Gargi.

"A pitcher of thoughts
Empty and sad
Lies in the niche of my courtyard
Silence sits thirsty
Running its tongue on its lips
Begging for a few water-words.
"Desire dug a well in my courtyard
The days strike hammer strokes
The nights shovel blades
And years crack like stones
No water-word sparkles in the pit.
"The dark lonely well
Sits quiet resting its paw on its chin
Chewing the cud of
Clods of earth and bits of stones
Staring at the Sileence."
