Subject: Ghalib: woh aake KHwaab meiN...
Hi
I am back again, with a ghazal by who-else-but Ghalib. I
took help from
U.V.Ravindra on RMIM, for the first two shers. The other
translations are my
own. They are welcome to scrutiny. Mirzajee arz karte haiN:
1. woh aake KHwaab meiN taskeen-e-iztiraab
to de
wale mujhe tapish-e-dil, mazaal-e-KHwaab to de
[Be it only in my dreams, but won't she come
and quell my anxiety,
Let it burn my heart (give me a heartburn?), but at least let me
have the power/strength to hope ...]
2. kare hai qatl lagaawat meiN tera ro dena
teree tarah koee teGH-e-nigah ko aab to de
[ every tear shed by you(from anger) in love is
devastating & I have always loved this anger
is there any one like you, who can bring tears to their angry
eyes in this fashion]
3. dikhaake jumbish-e-lab hee tamaam kar
hamko
na de jo bosa, to muNh se kaheeN jawaab to de
[By showing some motion/vibration of your lips,
finish my worry/anxiety/eagerness
Don't give me a kiss, if you are not for it, but at least give me
an answer/reply]
4. pila de oak se saaqee jo hamse nafrat hai
pyaala gar naheeN deta na de, sharaab to de
[Give me a drink from the palm of your hands,
if you hate me
If you don't want to give me a glass(a glass of alchohol), don't,
but at least give me a drink]
5. 'Asad' KHushee se mere haath paaNv phool
gaye
kaha jo usne zara mere paaNv daab to de
['Asad', I became so filled with happiness,
When she asked me to massage/press her hands and feet]
Dictionary: wale = even though; taskeen
= satisfaction; iztiraab = anxiety;
tapish = burn/passion; mazaal = strength; lagaawat
= affection; tegh = sword;
aab = cool; jumbish = motion/vibration; bosa
= kiss;
oak = palms of the hand held to hold water
regards
Ramesh
