Subject: Ghazal from Desires!

Hi

Well, I do not know the shayar but this ghazal is sweet. It appeared on
the album Desires by Jagjit & Chitra Singh, and was sung by Chitra.

jab naam tera pyaar se likhthi haiN oongliaN
meri taraf zamaane ki ut-thi haiN oongliaN

(oongliaN - fingers)

(When, with love, I write your name, using my fingers
The whole world goes against me, pointing their fingers)

daaman sanam ka haath meiN, aaya tha ek pal
din raath uss hi pal se mehak thi haiN oongliaN

(daaman - skirt, a foot of a mountain, a lap, in this case the beloved's
skirt, when one lies on her lap)
(mehak - smell of a fragrance)

(For one moment, my beloved's skirt had passed through my hand
Day and night, the fragrance of that moment, can be smelt on my fingers)

jis din se door ho gaye, uss din se hi sanam
bas din tumhare aane ki ginthi haiN oongliaN

(From the day that you went far away, from that day, my beloved
My fingers have been doing nothing else but counting the days till your arrival)

patthar taraash kar na bana taj ek naya
fankaar ki jahaN meiN kat thi haiN oongliaN

(tarash - sculptured/polished; fankaar - artist/in this case a sculpturer)

(How many stones/marbles have been sculptured/polished, but a new Taj Mahal has not been built
In this world, an artist's fingers always get cut)

regards
Ramesh
