Subject: Ghazal!

Hi ghazal lovers

Although I am not as prolific as other shayari writers on the Digest, I do
have some of my own. I am posting one of them, with the fond hope that
readers will not hesitate in responding back with whatever errors/mistakes
they find in terms of the 'beher' and grammar of the shers.

1. auroN ko kush karte rahe aur khud gham sehte rahe
zindagi bhar hum ek gham gusaar ki talaash karte rahe

[gham gusaar - a sympathiser; one to share sorrows]

[I kept making others happy and bore a lot sorrows myself
I spent my whole life looking for a genuine sympathiser]

2. na koi hamraaz mila, na koi hamsafar ka saath
jahaN bhi gaye, siraf yaad-e-maazi ko saath karte rahe

[yaad-e-maazi - thoughts from the past]

[Neither did I find a confidant, nor did I find a fellow-traveller
where ever I went, I made my past thoughts as my fellow-traveller]

3. haiN rooh ussi dehleez par, bas jism haiN yahaN
kiska haiN yeh kasoor, bas yahi sochthe rahe

[My soul/spirit is on my beloved's doorstep, only my body is here
Due to whose fault has it happened, I only kept thinking of this]

4. yooN tho manzil saamne thi magar hamen na thi koi talab
caravan guzrthe rahe aur hum siraf dekthe rahe

[talab - desire/wish]

[My goal was right in front and close, but I did not have any desire/wish to make it
Caravan's kept passing by me, and I only kept watching them pass by]

5. khud pe afsos karne se ab kya fayda hoga, 'ramesh'
tum apne liye kab, siraf doosroN ke liye jeethe rahe

[There is no point in getting disappointed with yourself now, ramesh
You always lived for the sake of others, not for yourself]

regards

Ramesh
